Theyre the perfect size for one word. Print or d raw a picture of the word and then write the word in or around it. Something like mano  (hand)  might be easy, but how would you depict the word  castigar  (to punish), for example?Stick those pictures up where youll see them every day. Inflict these drawings and vocabulary interpretations on your colleagues, friends, partners and kids.  The funnier the better of course!For the more modern among you, get out your tablet drawing programs and let your imagination run wild. One picture a day used as your tablet desktop background or screensaver would add to your vocabulary repertoire in no time.There are even online programs, such as Wordle, that let you create word clouds with funky designs which you can then print as posters.However, if youd rather not display your artistic talents to all who enter your home or pass your desk, the good news is that just the mere act of drawing (or trying to draw!) that picture will take you one step closer to never forgetting the word that inspired i t.4. Make a sentenceQuite simply, write a sentence with the word in it.This is important because youre using the word in context. Your brain will remember the kinds of  situations and collocations associated with that word for next  time.For example: You just learned the word burro (donkey).  You could write: Los burros apestan (Donkeys are smelly).Then don’t forget to go out and use that word again and again in real life.Make it your mission to speak to someone and use that word  when you speak: Mira ese burro, es muy gordo! (Look at that donkey. Its so fat!)You may come up with some strange and wonderful things,  but your brain sure will remember!5. Use your own languageAssociation.  This can be fun. There are some words in your target language, no doubt, that sound like ones in your own native language. Do your best to associate them with one another in your mind.For example: Bigote,  Spanish for beard sounds like Big goatee!Call up the associated word in your native tongue and you’ll find yourself remembering the new word. This works especially well with funny-sounding associations!6. Use gesturesFor those kinetic learners among you, associating a word with a gesture can be extremely  helpful.Let’s not forget that Latin speakers naturally tend to be far more expressive with their gestures  than anglophones anyway. For example, rubbing the bottom of your chin with the tops of your fingers means something like, ¿Qué me importa? (What do I care?)  in Argentina. Why should Argentinians have all the fun? You should go ahead and invent your own!How would you act out to land a plane? (aterrizar) or to win (ganar)?Assign a hand gesture to that difficult word and your brain will be more likely to recall it when you repeat that gesture later on.  7. Avoid word overloadGenerally our brains can’t take in too much new information, so don’t go  crazy and try to memorize 40 words a day. Not to mention, you won’t have any wall space  left in your house!Limit yourself to 10 new words a day, maximum. Ideally, I’d start with 5 a day. That’s 35  new words a week, 140 a month  and 1,680 a year.That gets you well on your way to reaching the average of 2,000 words we use on a regular basis and what makes up the core of our vocabulary. That’s plenty to practice  with! Dont forget that youll need to review old vocabulary words that slip through the cracks of your memory, so youll be busy as it is without piling on more daily words.8.  Practice makes perfectUnfortunately, the age old proverb is right: practice makes perfect.Think about riding a bike. How did we all learn?Someone explained it to us. We listened and half-understood. We thought we might try and we fell off. The Brigham Young University-Idaho College Experience Blythe earned her bachelors degree in geology from Brigham Young University-Idaho. She specializes in writing tutoring, science tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at Brigham Young University-Idaho: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Blythe: The campus is fairly small for a university campus. Its about a fifteen minute walk from one end to the other. The campus is rural, located in the small town of Rexburg, Idaho. I felt very safe on campus; there was never a time when I felt at risk in any way. There are buses for specific places, such as Walmart or certain apartment complexes. However, nearly everything needed is within walking distance, so neither a car nor bike isa huge necessity. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Blythe: In my experience, the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants are always available. If the professors arent available, their TAs definitely are. As a former TA, I can attest that we were available as much as possible for the students. The campus is very student friendly. The professors all are working there because they want their students to succeed, so they make themselves available as often as possible. I did not have a single professor that was unwilling to work outside of the classroom with a student. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Blythe: I did not participate in the dorm life, but most of the apartment complexes are located within a five or ten-minute walk to campus. Both dorms and off-campus apartments live by an honor code; all students abide by it, whether they live in dorms or apartments. The Honor Code is a set of rules or guidelines each student pledges and promises to follow, which creates a safe and respectful environment on and off campus. There are usually two persons to a room, and anywhere between four and eight to apartments, depending on the size. The socialization opportunities are excellent. Almost every evening, and definitely every weekend, there are multiple social activities going on. These vary from dancing, to cultural celebrations, to group hikes. There is a great variety of activities continuously being held. Ive never been in a more social environment. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Blythe: The majority of the majors and programs are represented and supported. It seems like I heard more about the communications major than any other major, but each program on campus is supported. I studied geology, because I love learning about the processes of the earth and its formation. BYU-I is lacking a bit in the support of the sciences, however. There are fewer students majoring in science than in other areas, such as communications and physical therapy. As a result, the university really cuts back on the funds and classes for the science departments, especially geology. The science professors, however, fight fiercely to keep the departments running smoothly and efficiently, so I would still recommend majoring in science. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Blythe: As a freshman, it is extremely easy to meet people and make friends. The orientation at the beginning of each semester is centered around getting the students involved in as many activities as possible. I fully believe the school puts almost as much work into the social aspect, as it does the academic aspect. They do not have a Greek life at BYU-I. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Blythe: BYU-I has a career center, a tutoring center, and rehabilitation classes, just to name a few services. There are many different student support services, and if you utilize them, they are very helpful. In my experience, there is not a ton of campus recruiting. The recruiting that I do remember was for things such as student leadership conferences and career fairs. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Blythe: Every study area is easily available. The library can get a bit crowded at times, but other than a few days out of the semester, you can always find a place to study in the library. The library has a specific floor for quiet studying, so its always a great place to go before taking a test. Even if you cant find a place in the library, which is extremely rare, there are multiple lounge areas located in every building and every apartment complex. There is always a place to study and most of them are spacious. Describe the surrounding town. Blythe: The surrounding town is small, but quaint and homey. There are several places to spend time and do activities. The campus has game rooms and a bowling area. There are a few movie theaters in town, one of which has bowling, an arcade, and mini golf. There are four or five parks located around town as well. The Teton Mountain Range is less than two hours away, and is great for hiking, camping, and various outdoor activities. Closer by, there are multiple camping and hiking areas. The area is perfect for almost any activity you can think of. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Blythe: The student body has around 20,000 students. The class sizes range from 15-40 students, depending on the class. Ive never been in a class with more than 45 students in it. It makes the class very engaging and it makes it easy to listen and ask questions, and get in depth responses from the professors. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Blythe: One of my most memorable experiences at BYU-I was during what the Geology Department calls Field School. We went out into the field for six weeks and studied and utilized all the skills we learned in our classes. It was an excellent learning and growing experience, spending that much time with our peers and colleagues. During that time, I grew to know my peers not just as peers, but as family. We learned to work with each other in ways I never realized were possible. The last two weeks were the most intense and rigorous physically and mentally. The weekend before, I was in a biking accident and I was having a hard time walking. Everyone was so helpful, that it actually began to be a bit annoying. As annoying as it got, the help and support that everyone there provided me was a great comfort. Field School was one of, if not the single, hardest thing Ive ever done. Without the aid of my professors and peers, I would never have finished it. As hard as it was, it was also the mos t memorable and fulfilling thing I have done thus far. What makes BYU-I great is not the college itself, its the people. They are genuine, kind, loving, and fun. They make each other better, and they make attending BYU-I worth it. If youve already mastered guitar chords and guitar chord transitions on your normal, 6-string guitar, why not take it up a notch?   Experimenting with a 7-string guitar can be a great way to enhance your skills and try something new, once youve been taking guitar lessons for a while. However, even though its just one more string, the transition can be tricky for some. To help you get started with the 7-string guitar, heres a great article by Tom Hess, featuring some great tips for navigating that extra string: Are you struggling with musical creativity on 7 string guitar? If so, dont worry. ?This is actually a very common issue for most 7 string guitarists. This is especially the case if the majority of your time has been spent playing on a 6 string guitar. Even though there are many similarities between 7 and 6 string guitar, 7 string guitar brings many new things to the table in terms of its physical feel and potential for creative musical expression. To become an excellent 7 string guitar player, you will need to fully understand how to overcome any challenges that arise with your new instrument. It is also necessary for you to become aware of all the new guitar playing possibilities that will help you express yourself better in your music. As you continue reading the rest of this article, I will show you many new ideas to help you express yourself creatively in your 7 string guitar playing. Integrate The Low B String Into Your Lead Guitar Playing Since a 7 string guitar essentially adds a bass string onto the guitar, many guitarists consider the instrument to be primarily used for rhythm. However, this is only a single piece of the puzzle. In fact, 7 string guitar is unique because it gives you a great opportunity to extend your lead guitar playing into the lower range as well. To get the most from this instrument, extend the scale and arpeggio patterns you know from 6 string guitar onto the low B string. This will help you to expand the pitch range of your lead guitar phrases to make it more similar to piano. If you dont know how to do this yourself, find a guitar teacher who knows how to effectively teach these 7 string guitar playing concepts. Discover And Build Unique Chord Patterns The 7 string guitar can be used to create many interesting chords that are not possible on a 6 string guitar. In most cases, musicians will use the 7 string guitar to play in a metal style; however, you are not limited to this style alone. The 7 string guitar can be played in a wide variety of different musical genres. With the addition of the extra seventh string, you can give basic guitar chords a much more interesting sound. The coolest part of this is that you can use the low B string to essentially play standard guitar and bass guitar simultaneously! To demonstrate this, I am going to show you an exercise. First, turn off any distortion settings you have and play through a clean channel on your amp. For this exercise, you will be experimenting with various guitar chords that you may have already learned on 6 string guitar. First, create some chords using only the fifth, fourth, and third strings. Then, combine these chords with the low B string. Next, try this same idea, but use the third, second, and first strings. While you are experimenting with this exercise, pay attention to how different it feels when you are playing the strings closer (in pitch) vs. the strings that are farther apart in pitch. Which one of these do you think sounds more pleasing overall? Once you have decided this, you can begin using this idea in your own 7 string guitar music. Learn To Use The Entire Range Of The Instrument In most cases, guitarists are introduced to 7 string guitar through heavy metal riffs played by their favorite bands. This influences them to purchase a 7 string guitar for themselves. As soon as they pick up this instrument, they focus all their energy into creating heavy riffs or rhythms on the low B string. This is certainly one of the most unique features that a 7 string guitar has to offer, however if you spend too much time on the same string, your music will quickly become stale and uninteresting. For instance, lets say that you are going to create a song. In this song, you have a wide variety of instruments to choose from such as guitar, piano, bass, keyboard, drums, etc. However, while writing this composition, you decide to create the music by ONLY using the lowest pitch ranges that can be played on each instrument for the entire duration of the song! Im willing to bet that your listeners will become bored after the first 30 seconds. After this amount of time, your audience would likely be listening to the music while saying to themselves: Are you going to ever play some higher notes?? This is exactly what happens when many people play 7 string guitar. By spending all your time on the low B string, your guitar playing will lack variety. In order to fix this, focus on incorporating the other strings into your rhythm guitar playing. This will balance things out, and keep your music more interesting. If you would like to be more creative on 7 string guitar, it is essential that you understand and apply this concept. When I show my own guitar students how to compose songs, I train them how to master this idea of balance in their music. Combine Rhythm Guitar Chords With Lead Guitar Melodies One of the signs that you are becoming a truly great 7 string guitar player is when you are able to cleanly and accurately shift between rhythm and lead guitar parts while still playing in time. When playing 7 string guitar, this skill becomes more challenging due to the wider guitar neck that makes it harder to jump from lower range notes to higher range notes. To get better at combining rhythm and lead guitar together, you will need to not only be able to play both parts flawlessly on their own, but you also must practice the specific moment of transition from one part to the next. To make quick improvement in this area of your guitar playing, focus on playing each part without mistakes (and with good timing), then slowly integrate the two. For additional help, record yourself playing these parts together. By recording yourself, you will be able to hear any mistakes you make with much more clarity. Minimize All Unwanted String Noises For most guitar players, it is very tough in the beginning to eliminate excess guitar noise coming from any strings that are not being played. This is due in part to the significant change in the physical feel of a 7 string guitar compared to 6 string guitar. This change comes not only from the additional string, but also from a wider guitar neck. This will take some time for you to get used to. If you want to make your guitar playing cleaner, you need to make it a priority to fix any string noise problems in your technique. Listen closely as you play guitar so that you can hear any extra noise that occurs. Then, use guitar string muting techniques to minimize the noise until only the notes you want to hear remain.
